About the Author….

Gerlean Y. Baylor is a wife, mother, and woman of faith that is passionate about helping young ladies realize that the world’s view of pretty is not limited to the external. My Pretty Inside is an ode to her eleven-year-old daughter, Kylea, and serves as a love story to young girls that are at the age where they begin to question themselves.

With a devout faith in God that was instilled early in adolescence, Gerlean has always had a desire to help people. Born in Meridian, Mississippi, as the youngest of five children to a naval chief petty officer and Navy wife, Gerlean learned at an early age that it was much better to give than receive. This early lesson has translated to her adult life and intermediate family as their family motto is based on the words of Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much is required.”

Gerlean lives to serve as an example to young ladies and teach them that they are limitless in whatever they truly choose to do, with God leading them in their decisions. This desire to serve others has manifested over the years from home health care to paralegal studies, and eventually human resources. Ever committed to learning, Gerlean had dedicated herself to achieving an MBA in organizational development from Upper Iowa University (2002), an MBA in human resources from Capella University (2016) and is presently pursing her PhD in human resources management from Northcentral University. Gerlean’s devotion to her husband of twenty-three years and three children can only be matched by her service to others, including the countless Blessing Bags that she has provided to dozens of mothers that she supports through a pregnancy help center in Alexandria, Virginia, where she currently resides. Gerlean is a 2020 inductee in the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the Society Human Resources Management (SHRM).
